Cefrium is the Chromium Embedded Framework ported to native Android, shipped as a Gradle SDK.
An Android app that needs a browser engine gets the system WebView, whose version and behaviour change with the device and the OEM. Cefrium embeds the full Chromium engine instead: the same engine everywhere, off-screen rendering, multi-process operation through Android services, and the CEF API. Upstream CEF has no Android support and documents it as difficult. This project closes that gap.
Cefrium is free software under LGPL-3.0-or-later and stays that way. You can ship it in a commercial product at no cost. Nothing is held back for paying users.
What a donation funds. Not features -- maintenance. Cefrium tracks Chromium stable, so every engine update means re-validating each carried patch, keeping parity with upstream security fixes, and testing on real devices across the Android OEM matrix. That work has no end date, and it is what makes the project safe to depend on.
It is maintained by one person: Juan Manuel Mendez Rey, who also maintains the CEF packages in Debian.
Priority support, alternative license terms and sponsored engineering are arranged separately, at https://cefrium.com/commercial/
Cefrium is a downstream port. Upstream CEF is a separate project, with its own maintainer and its own funding.
