An island-wide system to collect non-biodegradable articles is needed to protect our land and waters from degradation and help remediate the worldwide issues of pollution and climate change. A closed-loop recycling system ensures that the non-biodegradable items we consume is given another life and stays out of the environment. It conserves resources and energy, reduces pollution and greenhouse gases harming our planet and its inhabitants, and helps restore ecosystems. The closed-loop recycling system operates in the following ways: Products are manufactured. Products are purchased by a consumer. Consumer recycles the products. Products are sorted and processed into materials to make the same products or different ones.

The plan for our project is two-fold: 1. Start collecting and sending off-shore as many articles as possible to keep them off our environment. 2. As soon as we generate enough funds for our own processing plant, we will stop sending collected articles off-shore and process and create materials on island.

The system we seek to implement will have the following tasks: -Collection of non-biodegradable items at various sites throughout the island in exchange for monetary compensation. The amount of monetary compensation will depend on the material of the items and the amount of items collected by weight. -Transport of collected items from the collection sites to the recycling center. -Sorting of the items based on material and their destination. -Transport to shipping ports and recycling centers in the mainland US from the shipping ports and/or transport to material processing and manufacturing plants on island

In an effort to recycle as many different materials of non-biodegradable articles as possible, we will be partnering with various private and public institutions across the country. A closed-loop recycling center on Guam will not only help the island become more sustainable environmentally but economically as well. It will be a crucial part of developing and maintaining a circular economy where waste is reduced, energy, resources, and money are conserved, and both businesses and consumers benefit emotionally from a deeper connection with the things they consume and economically from the costs conserved in production and purchasing. Overall, a circular economy is a holistic benefit to the communities that utilize it.
